reebok fuel foam review

Rather than the adidas and Nike rivalry of today, much of the focus was on Reebok vs. Nike. The Forever Floatride Energy 2 (FFE 2) exceeds expectations with an improved upper while carrying over the superior ride quality. The laces are wide, thick, and somewhat tubular in construction. Dr. Klein is a Doctor of Physical Therapy, Board Certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist and Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapists. Apart from the Floatride Run Ultraknit, Reebok also retails the Run Fast, Run Fast Pro, the Floatride RS and the Floatride Flexweave – all of which are based on the Floatride platform.

That sole was even thicker and softer, better suited for daily training. The Floatride Run was the first model to make use of the company’s proprietary Floatride Foam when it was released in 2017.

If you look around for shoes with a knit upper and a cushy, non-EVA midsole, there aren’t many options. Currently we have 42 miles(David) and 57 miles (Matt) on our pairs. The company’s Aztek shoe nabbed a five star rating from Runner’s World back in 1979, and its women’s aerobics shoes, which debuted in the mid-80s, became wildly popular during the step aerobics craze. The outsole also shows off a bold mix of light colors and textures, which make the shoe more attractive. Cushioned and supportive ride, pace-friendly transitions, breathable, smooth interior, good price-value, durable and weather-resistant midsole. A bigger internal toe-stiffener and midfoot sleeve provide the Forever Energy 2 with more structure.

The new midsole feels great – it’s soft, lightweight, and responsive. Purely by design or accident, Reebok peaks as a running shoe brand every 10 years or so. In addition, Reebok added a protective layer around the midsole, which should help the shoe withstand rope climbs and other tough workouts. The company that would later become Reebok began as teenage tinkering: In 1895, Joseph William Foster started making shoes in his bedroom in Bolton, England. The heel also has a pull tab which also helps get your feet inside. Terrible!

The mesh is stretchy and yet the toe-box is shallow. We’ve mentioned the adidas UltraBoost so many times in this review so it won’t be fair to exclude it from this list. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a better running shoe for a hundred bucks. As a standalone product, the Floatride Run ULTK's upper fit and ride manners leave a lot to be desired. Between the midsole and the removable insole is another layer of EVA foam.

If you tie the shoe a little tight to get it secure, it feels somewhat constricting.

Another component directly affecting the fit of the shoe is its criss-cross stretchable laces.

A versatile ride character is what the Glide had in spades, and that holds for the Reebok shoe as well. All things being considered, Reebok gets an A+ grade for the Forever Floatride Energy 2 update. All the design tweaks are upper-related, and that leads to a slight change in the fit. Sure, there’s a thin and pliable internal bumper but that’s more for giving the toe-box some shape.

For a better part of the last decade, Reebok seemed it was trying to do everything without being good at anything. We usually buy products at full retail price. The Floatride Energy excels between pace ranges of 4’30” to 5’30” per km. The single-piece Ultraknit upper has a soft hand feel with a gentle stretch quality. Not every shoe needs to have a flaw. To sum up, you should get 300 miles if the upper holds up. The outsole durability isn’t at par with adidas Continental or Saucony’s crystal rubber, but it wears well. The midsole also lacks a wide flare or base, and the midfoot has a slim profile. This change alone makes most Reebok shoes better looking, and the Floatride Energy 2 is no exception. Go to the rear, and there’s a complex gathering of materials creating a rigid structure. Compare this to the React, which stiffened beyond recognition when subjected to below freezing temperatures. Cross training? Also, the Floatride Run Ultraknit is only good for linear running at easy paces (10 min/mile or 6 min/km or slower).

Also, the neoprene-like layer is sandwiched between the frame and the Ultraknit upper.

The shoe looks nice and the laces are great.

Reebok’s marketing pitch: Cushions the feet while staying incredibly lightweight.

I hadn’t felt that at the gym, just the couple of times when I wore them all day. Was it a running shoe brand? This foam helps the Floatride Run Fast deliver excellent cushioning without bulking up the weight, making for a remarkable speed shoe that was worthy of our 2018 Gear of the Year award.

The heel grip is good, if not great – which is true for most shoes with this flared design. The Reebok Trideca 200 is available in standard sizing measurements for both men and women. The upper was pretty basic but there was very little to complain about. View the Floatride RS as the Reebok’s spin on the adidas Ultraboost uncaged – a shoe for easygoing, casual use. Along with the consistent single-density set-up, the midsole volume also plays a part in the ride character. Even the Reebok Floatride Run 2.0 with its soft Pebax midsole is an option, but it’s got a bit of a lifestyle sneaker vibe. Naturally, going slower than 5’30” isn’t a problem. The Floatride Run Ultraknit features the PEBA-based foam in a full-length form.

In our review of the FFE 1, we described the midsole softness as being halfway between the cushier adidas Boost foam and the firmer Saucony Everun. It helps that the outsole layout is flat, thus preventing localized wear and tear.

Follow myself and the select few who contribute on our journey to help you understand your body and the shoes you wear. This shoe won a 2018 Gear of the Year award from Runner’s World. The 2020 Forever Floatride Energy 2 has something that the V1 lacked. On the bottom, a rippled rubber outsole provides durable grip as you explore the urban jungle—which is exactly where these shoes belong. The upper doesn’t feel supportive from the midfoot to the forefoot; one gets the feeling that the foot is being pushed or loaded towards the inner side. The Floatride Fuel foam is an expanded pellet thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) foam, which is more responsive and lighter compared to traditional EVA foams. The comfort levels go up several notches inside the heel and under the tongue. Improve this review by sharing your insights – submit a review here. Only time will tell, and I hope I am wrong.

It takes nearly 18 months for the brands to design the shoes, compile orders, manufacture, and ship to the retailers. They provide enough comfort to last through a gym session of weighted squats, to lunges, and finishing up a workout with a 3-mile walk/run on the treadmill. That, or admiring the seamless upper construction of the Reebok S… We had our reasons, given the notoriety of the adidas Plastic cage and the top-down lacing pressure associated with fewer lacing rows. No other time in running footwear history has the market witnessed such a rapid proliferation of new midsole tech. The Achilles area made of the neoprene-like lining is prone to premature tearing.

There is no difference from a performance point of view so we recommend that you stick to the Ultraknit Floatride for greater comfort over the Flexweave.

On the contrary, this compound has been used in the footwear industry for a very long time. It was easy to get my wide feet in, and the top off-centered tongue pull tab comes in handy. So what is the new Floatride foam made of?

So far, the Pebax-based midsole appears to be very durable. If you’re a person who ties up your shoe in a rushed and hard way, I feel they will tear. Landings and transitions are a bit muffled; while the e-TPU midsole (not to confused with Reebok’s Pebax foam) is quick to return to its original form after a compression cycle, you won’t get Nike Zoom X or Saucony Pwrrun+ levels of bounce. It’s the typical cause-and-effect at work here. The company launched its Pebax-based Floatride Foam in the spring of 2017, which delivers optimal energy return with much less weight than EVA or TPU-based foams. As the foot gradually swells, the midfoot cage feels increasingly intrusive. Or do you want a cushioned ride plus a lower-profile midsole?

This did not influence the outcome of this review, written after running more than 50 miles in them. Most colorways that I’ve seen of the shoe are all striking and range from bright colors to your regular black and white. (Side note: I don’t do extreme weights in squats just a couple of 45-pound plates on each side.). These differences are accompanied by a $30 premium over the Floatride’s retail price. This is the premium version of the Run Fast, and at an incredible 3.5 ounces, it’s even lighter than the version above. They also have a high drop, which helps propel your feet forward, and a full rubber outsole adds durability and traction in slick conditions. Nearly 7 years ago, Timberland became the first brand to use Pebax foam in its LiteTrace mid mountain boot as a midsole material. In essence, it’s hard to use the market feedback of the current shoe to improve the next model. The Reebok Forever Floatride Energy 2 is a lightweight speed trainer that ... (Read expert review… Several commenters were happy because of this shoe’s perfect fit.

Over longer runs of 10 miles and beyond, the inwards biased upper fit and the excessive gathering of materials underneath the arch leads to a mild discomfort. The insole isn’t your typical, compression-molded, drop-in kind.

It also provides maximum traction even in slick conditions.

The Off-center tongue pull tab and criss-cross stretchable laces offer additional comfort and give a unique look to the shoe. The outsole also has a fair bit of overhang as it extends way past the actual heel position. For example, the Floatride Run Fast is promising; a lightweight trainer with an all-around performance. Perhaps unfamiliar would be a more appropriate term. And it’s ok to give a running shoe a 95% rating once in a while. The upper lacks the plastic frame and instead uses an internal support layer. The wide mesh vents heat while strong, kevlar-like strands hold its shape, so the shoe can maintain a snug fit. Saucony is phasing out Everun in favor of the plusher Pwrrun+, so Reebok’s Floatride Energy foam will eventually become the firmest e-TPU variant. It doesn’t help that the Floatride Run doesn’t have much of a heel bevel. Clinical Analysis of Running, Running Footwear, and Injury Prevention/Performance. Racing flats like the Reebok Floatride Run Fast Pro (pricey, though) are excellent performers for speed runs, track intervals, and races.

It works as a casual shoe for everyday use or low-intensity running over shorter miles. The centerpiece of the Run Fast is the Pebax-based Floatride Foam. 10 mm heel drop. Hello! This includes a thermoplastic midfoot skeleton which also wraps around the heel and a neoprene-like material which is molded to create the midfoot and heel. It could be related to the stack height, but we’re saying it like is.

We even reviewed one of those shoes on solereviewaround 11 years ago.

The Floatride foam has an unique ride character, so placing it in the same bucket as similarly priced neutral trainers make little sense. This sensation isn’t acute; rather, a nagging feeling which you wish would disappear. Sure, the fit was a bit long in the forefoot and the tongue had no sleeve.

A single layer mesh upper and EVA-based bootie sockliner provide a snug fit and extra cushion.
